About Park

One of the favorite places of the Augsburgers

After the Second World War until the renovation in 1964, the courtyard garden was used only as an orchard. Since opening to the public, there are tulip trees, ginkgo trees, hibiscus bushes, wisteria and flowerbeds, as well as book hedges and pyramids. Ornamental fish and European turtles live in the lily pond. Next to it, a big fountain bubbles up.

In addition to plants and animals, the Augsburg Hofgarten also houses five dwarven figures made of sandstone. The baroque sculptures created by Johann Wolfgang Schindel in 1744/45 were erected in the Wittelsbacherpark until 1963. These are so-called grotesque figures, which can also be seen in a similar form in the "Zwerglgarten" of the Bastionsgarten in Salzburg. They depict dwarfish people who have been "entertained" by European royal courts during the Baroque period.
