Only after World War I was sealed by the Versailles Treaty of 1919, the end of Mainz Castle. Because of the terms of the contract, all fortifications had to be destroyed. The French occupation force, which occupied southern Rhineland after the defeat of the German Reich, moved to the former fortress Mainz. Fortresses and fortresses in the 17th and 18th centuries were still partially used as training grounds for French soldiers. For the 2000 anniversary of Mainz, the heavily damaged park was redesigned in the War Park and connected through a pedestrian walkway with the city park.
