A park-like area in the Thuringian capital Erfurt

Today, this park is located at the point where the inner fortifications of the city used to cross the Gera. In the 16th century, there were at times up to seven water mills in the area of the park, but today they are all dismantled or redesigned. In 1666, the first naming of the dyer's house to the little Venedige on the Breitstrominsel and 1826 was this island in a city map for the first time referred to as Venice. The origin of the name is based on the one hand on the Old High German word Fenn, or the Rhenish word veen, which designates a swamp or a boggy lowland. Dige in the second part of the word is the Middle Low German equivalent for growth, prosperity or swelling. It is closer, however, to make a connection to the Italian city of Venice, with which Erfurt maintained trade relations for many centuries. From 1998, the areas were gradually redesigned by the garden and cemetery office Erfurt and completed in 2004 with two new bridges, wide green areas and foot and cycle paths.
