It was commonly called Villa della Lupa

Located in an urban area, close to the historical center, Lecce Public Park is located between Viale XXV Luglio, Via Achille Costa, Via San Francesco d’Assisi and Via Giuseppe Garibaldi. There are four entrances, one for each surrounding street, all with an iron gate and are all accessible; the main entrance opens onto the viale XXV Luglio. Villa is easily accessible during public opening hours. It covers about 34,000 square meters of fairly uniform flat geometry, with a slight increase in altitude on the north side. Owned by the municipality of Lecce, it is protected by a ministerial declaration dated 25 September 1923.

Between 1817 and 1818, Marcus Giuseppe Siva Grimaldi, intended for Terra Dutranto, promoted a series of urban planning interventions for the suburban area just behind the walls. A project to implement tree-lined roads and a public park, prepared by municipal engineer Bernardino Bernardini and natural scientist Gaetano Stella, will be built in 1818 and approved by the Council of Intentions the following year. To create a garden and nursery trees, you can choose a large area in front of the Palace of Intention, which Decurionato decided to make it "pleasant".

To build the work, in 1830 an amount of 6445.26 ducat was placed on the balance sheet; the project is designed by engineer Luigi Pino, which draws a polygon-shaped space "with rounded corners to encourage walking", with a fence consisting of a railing (originally painted wood) alternating with trunks Stone pillars. Gaetano Stella, former director of the Botanical Garden and first director of the Villa dei Lecce in front of the House of the Intendency, provides for filling and leveling the area and buys the first fruit trees, ornamental and rose plants.

Since 1883 the municipal villa was named after Giuseppe Garibaldi. Previously, it was commonly called Villa della Lupa, since there was a cage near some specimens of the wolf (near the entrance to the city of Lecce, which the Romans called it), near the main entrance.
