The park is a pasture of horses for a stable stable nearby. The area was a shallow and watery estuary until the 1930s and 1940s, when the garden was filled with earthworks. After that, Hollihaka was still a grazing area for the locals, until construction of the park began in the 1960s. It is believed that the high hill in the middle of the garden was a former dump.
