There are more than 10,000 species of different plants

The origins of the Linz botanical garden are due to the maintenance of a botanical garden next to the Wesianum College, a Jesuit high school, in Frenberg.

In 1926, the city of Linz took over the botanical garden of the Dinghoferstrasse Natural History Society, built in 1869, as a public facility, which had to give way to the Physicians' Assembly and the building of the Upper Austria Medical Association in 1937 due to the sale of the area by the city of Linz. Plants were seized by the city's nursery, but most plants fell victim to destruction during World War II.

After the war, the Public Schools Council of Upper Austria applied to the Mayor of Linz in 1946 to create a new botanical garden, in which in 1950 he allocated an area of 1.8 hectares in Roseggerstrasse in Gugl to create a new garden. In 1952, Mayor Ernst Korf finally opened the National Botanical Garden in his current location. The area was first expanded in 1961 with basic purchases. In 1963, the International Succulent Research Organization (IOS) announced that the Linz City Botanical Garden is the fourth European sponsor of a group of protective plants and aloe plant species. The expanded area was opened in 1965 and a second piece of land was purchased in the same year.

A year later, Linz Botanical Garden reached the current size of about 4.2 hectares with the creation of the rose garden. In the following years there were many transfers and new buildings from greenhouses, and work and management buildings. In 2000, the park was enriched with the possibility of organizing more cultural events by building an open-air theater with 100 seats, a seminar room and a café. After merging the Botanical Garden with the Linz City Natural History Station as part of its internal restructuring in 2005, the Natural Park with Insect Hotel, Bee Gallery, Natural Stone Wall, Hedgehog Shelter and other animal dwellings increased the focus on animals in the Linz Garden.
