Some ancient tombstones remind us of the function of the former cemetery

In the old town map of 1826, there is the existing West Park, the former Westentot farm, already identified. Located on the doors of Ackerbürgerstadt, surrounded by meadows and fields. The cemetery was built in 1811. At this time, Dortmund numbered only 4000 inhabitants. After one hundred years (1914), a quarter of a million have already been surpassed. In light of the enormous economic development and the resulting population explosion, it was expected that the present tombs - Westentotenhof, Ostenfriedhof, Südwestfriedhof and Nordfriedhof - were no longer able to perform their funerary function in the long term.

In 1912, the Council of Municipalities and Cities decided to build a new major cemetery in Brackl. Through this decision, another agreed, the four graves mentioned above no longer prove, but as soon as possible in the green areas for the recovery of the population to remedy the great shortage in the inner area of the city.

With the rapid development of the urban area, the provision of green urban renewal has not kept pace. Around 1890, the area surrounding the Westnet farm was already largely developed, especially in the northern region. The decision of the Municipal Council and the City to convert the four existing tombs into green recreational areas, above all the Westont Farm, is the oldest cemetery located outside the city gates.

Today, Westpark is a quiet and quiet recreation area in a central location with very beautiful old trees.
