About Park

It occupies a plot of land between Castelet

The grounds were originally part of the plan that surrounded Castelet. In 1761 it became part of a tree-lined park, known as Esplanaden (English: The Esplanade), which was established between Northern Custom House and Eastern City Gate along the southern and western rim of Kastellet.

In the 1880s, after Kastellet lost its strategic role in defending the city, the Church of St. Alban English to earth. After World War II, the site was also chosen as the headquarters of the Danish Resistance Museum which was completed in 1957. Over the next few years, several war memorials were erected in the area that finally got its name in 1965.

The park memorial, Winston Churchill, is named with a bust designed by Oscar Nemon from 1955. Another bust, designed by Svind Lyndard, is located outside the Resistance Museum, and commemorates Major Anders Lassen, the only Danish who received the Victoria Cross for his efforts in World War II. Lyndard is also the artist behind the memorial to the Danish soldiers who fell in the Allied Forces, and who stands on the waterfalls of the Highlands of Raphael, in front of the main entrance to Castelet. It depicts a soldier wearing an English costume.

The park also houses a bronze statue of Valkyrie, a female figure in Scandinavian myths who chooses who will die, fight and choose in Valhalla, the posthumous hall of the murdered. Designed by Stephen Sending and implemented in Paris in 1908 but based on a sketch from 1872. A smaller version of painted wood, metal and colored stone was displayed in 1901, and another version from 1910, in bronze and ivory, collections from Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. A gift from Albertine Karl Karl Jacobsen created to provide sculptures and monuments for parks and squares in Copenhagen, the current statue was originally laid in Langelinie near the waterfront but was moved to its current location when Kastellet was rebuilt in the 1990s
