About Park

It is the oldest city walk park in the Netherlands

In 1813 the losing French troops in Deventer wanted to hold out against the advancing Cossack army. To have a free field of fire from the city over the west side of the IJssel, all buildings were burned and the trees felled. In 1815, King Willem I gave Deventer permission to restore the park on condition that the park had to be flattened again if the threat of war made this necessary. The new park was designed by Albertus van Leusen senior and was laid out in 1816. [1] Some of the oldest trees in the park date from this time. De Worp became a popular destination for a Sunday walk in the nineteenth century.
